one of the things I'm working on right now it getting a traditionally sized/shaped Yanagiba figured out I sent my first attempt to JBroida for some input and after a good discussion of all the stuff I messed up on that one I forged out this one. just over 300mm blade, W2 with Hamon 35mm tall at the heel right now it's 5.2mm thick but I will thin it a little 16.75mm Machi Posted Image |

How are you making the platen? I want to make one also but in the opposite direction for a more precise convex grind. |

here is the platen I made it's a scrap piece of .75x2 bar about 5" long I ground the face to a 24" radius. tapped two holes and bolted it to a piece of angle that was set up to install in the KMG platen position A concave platen would not work as the tension of the belt will cause it to ride on the high points of the radius face. Actually, Hoss has a concave platen to do his convex grinds and it works pretty well. However he made his with a mill which I don't have. I guess I could build a convex platen like this and then use it hollow out a concave platen. The other way I was thinking of doing it to bend a piece a metal to the radius I want and then grind one side flat. |
